An evening aboard a private yacht as the sun falls behind Albania's only island. What to expect, and how Guardian arranges it.
There's a moment, just before sunset, when the water between the Albanian mainland and Sazan Island turns from blue to gold. The cliffs on either side catch the last light, and the only sound is the engine at idle and the water against the hull. It's the kind of silence that luxury travelers spend careers searching for — and that Guardian arranges with a single conversation.
Private yacht charters along the Albanian Riviera aren't new. But the way Guardian approaches them is different. We don't hand you a boat and a captain. We design an experience — from departure point to anchorage to dinner reservation onshore — that feels like a single, unbroken narrative.
Most charters depart from Himarë or Sarandë, depending on the guest's accommodation. The primary destination is Sazan Island — Albania's only island, a former military base that's been partially opened to visitors. The waters around Sazan are some of the clearest in the Mediterranean, with visibility reaching 30-40 metres on calm days.
The standard route follows the coastline south from Himarë, passing through a series of bays that are only accessible by sea. Pirates' Cove — a narrow inlet flanked by vertical cliffs — is the most dramatic. Blue Eye Beach, named for a freshwater spring that creates an underwater light effect, is the most unusual. Both are arranged in advance through Guardian's maritime partners.
Guardian works with a fleet of privately crewed vessels ranging from 12-metre motor yachts to 20-metre sailing vessels. All are maintained to European standards, staffed by licensed crews, and stocked according to guest preferences — wines, spirits, fresh food, and whatever else the journey requires.
The choice of vessel depends on group size, journey length, and personal preference. A couple seeking a sunset cruise will choose differently than a family of six planning a full-day coastal exploration. Guardian matches the vessel to the journey, not the other way around.
The charter season runs from May through October, with peak conditions in June and September. July and August bring warmer water but also more boat traffic along the Riviera. For guests who value tranquillity over social energy, we recommend the shoulder months.
Half-day charters typically run 4-6 hours. Full-day charters extend to 8-10 hours, often including a lunch stop at a coastal restaurant accessible only by sea. Multi-day charters — departing from Sarandë and exploring south toward Corfu or north along the Riviera — are arranged for guests who want the journey to become the destination.
Everything. Transfer to the departure point. Vessel selection and provisioning. Route planning based on weather and preferences. Anchorage arrangements at specific coves. Onshore dining reservations that align with the return time. If the charter includes swimming, we coordinate snorkelling equipment. If it includes diving, we arrange a certified dive operator.
The guest's responsibility is to arrive at the dock at the agreed time. Everything else is invisible.
A private yacht charter along the Albanian Riviera isn't a sightseeing tour. It's an experience designed around your rhythm — when you want to move, where you want to anchor, what you want to eat, and how long you want to stay. Guardian has been arranging these journeys since 1999. We know every cove, every crew, every sunset.
